I can still see McLayne standing on the stairs to our loft office, grinning at PopPop and me, knowing the loft is forbidden territory, and waiting for one of us to say, ''McLayne, you can't go up there.'' All the time, smiling, and in slow motion raising a foot slowly-slowly-to the next stair, testing all the way.
